First International True Black Metal Festival in history of Russian Federation. Official Report.

FFFeast Crew would like to express full and categorical satisfaction with The Event, which took place August 27, 2005 Anno Domini in hero-city of Leningrad. Intra muros well-known rock-club Arctica the unexampled performance of the cult disciples of modern Orthodox Black Metal has come about. Those are: WATAIN vocal/instrumental ensemble, supported by two Russian underground performers: GELIDA OBSCURITAS (Moscow) & STORMING DARKNESS (Saransk).


First time in Russian History, recital of a serious foreign act took place without sexual minorities' love parade on a stage (usually marked as so called "warm-up"). It is, undoubtedly, a fatal violation of Russian rock/metal show business Tradition. Advertizing campaign conception did not implicate involving of rock journalists, well known web resources, and other essential "subculture components". Absence of accredited press was a direct consequence of that practice, which was, btw, highly approved by all the performing ensembles. Technicality of the concert, in whole, satisfied both, performers and organizers.

Certain confusion, to take place at the moment when audience was invited, was caused by drawn out of scheme soundcheck and other preparation works, caused by the creed specifity of performing bands. Besides, some chaos could be observed in merchandising division, which was, in general, composed of production and distro-catalogues of some Russian and Byelorussian underground labels. Due to unforeseen circumstances headliners could not present full assortment of merchandise, declared in the press release. That, most probably, upset significant part of band fans as well as people, who were "just interested". That fact can be considered a serious fault of The Event.

The band to open the festival was GELIDA OBSCURITAS (Moscow), first time performing in its renewed line up. Since band's previous performance, vocalist, bassist and drummer were replaced. However, the program material was mostly old (though only a few spectators were familiar with it). Rather raw, though even and selective sound. As an intro, fragment of J.-F. Rebel's (1666-1747, France) "Le Chaos", symphony "Le Chaos", rang out in thick darkness and shortly was followed by "lifting" composition, reminding GORGOROTH of "Under The Sign Of Hell" period. Lights were turned on along with music start and showed the audience scene decoration and figures of act participants. On the sides of the scene there were two cups filled with freshly folded coals, spreading scent of over-burnt incense. On the drum support, kinsize bull scull have been noticed, on the background - formation flag. Appearance of act participants was rather variegated.

However it was a good contribution to the whole performance. Long black robe of the guitarist disharmonized with white guitar, bassist (who was, in fact, an ITHDABQUTH QLIPHOTH guitarist) looked particularly modest, drummer referred to necro-aesthetics, using excessive amounts of white corpse paint, the vocalist expressed himself to the utmost, illustrated matter given hereby is eloquent of that. In general, scenic action of GELIDA OBSCURITAS looked rather static, that is probably a result of the lack of concert experience. The rest of 40 minutes program was carried out in context of Swedish and French Underground Black Metal. In the middle of the performance leader of ITHDABQUTH QLIPHOTH zinged up an action, by throwing fragments of ornithic fauna form, cynically massacred before the start of the event, at performing musicians, and enthused them heavily with that. Hysteria. Chaos. Amen.


 STORMING DARKNESS
STORMING DARKNESS… Deep (no even deeper) underground act gathered concert line-up (btw, from several cities of Russia) exclusively for their first gig within the festival. Being highly professional musicians, participants of SD managed to gain level, suiting live performance for mere 3 (three!) rehearsals. Nonetheless, only an overwhelming minority of an audience, familiar with the act (fortunately unavailable in rock stores of Russia's Federation), could feel the infernal power of SD music, due to the fact that it's extremely hard for apprehension. Objective weakness of the SD sound was low level of guitar coupled with loud and virtuoso drumming (provided by session musician with 10 years experience), that hardened comprehension of cracked and squall SD melodic by profane listeners even more. Let god have mercy on their souls.

Visual side of performance was a festivity of minimalism, well combined with the fullness of Music.

Lack of traditional attributes of "black metal image" stroked with sincerity, especially in contrast with Big Moscow Clownery, aka Exhibition of New Rocks and Vinyl Panties. Phantom, new vocalist of the band, participant of cult Russian Black Metal formation DAEMONOLATREIA (Samara) deserves separate mention.

Then there was almost one-and-a-half-an-hour break, before the Swedes' performance. As the matter of fact it wasn't on schedule, but was carried off by public listening of the latest masterpiece of ITHDABQUTH QLIPHOTH. Some technical problems occurred during scene decoration; as WATAIN are known for wide visualization of their ideological doctrine, they could leave it aside for such an exclusive and substandard Event. Fortunately for the venue owners, due to incompetence of local cattle slaughter authorities, headliners couldn't use blood, declared in rider, and intended for spilling all over the scene and the hall. Nonetheless, four impaled pig heads, coupled with chains, crosses and torches fully compensated such a heavy loss. It should me mentioned, that instead of "permanent" session bassist, who couldn't attend an arrangement, Mr. Set Teitan (ex-ABORYM member and present guitarist of reborn Death/Black Metal legend DISSECTION) came along with the band. Special feature of Russian WATAIN performance was sound engineering, done by Mr. Tore Stjerna (aka Necromorbus), the personality, who needs to be introduced only for poor in spirit. Concerning certain characteristics of Russian rock clubs, he did everything possible to create adequate vision of The Ritual.

Despite the fact that sound of first two songs was far from ideal, he, unlike other visitant "maestro" repaired a situation, as the result, the following material was accepted well enough, even by those, who heard it for the first time.

Describing headliners' stage performance is a hard job to do. Moreover, the photo gallery, given hereby, reflects spirit and atmosphere of the event poorly. Possessed act participants were syncretic nearly-anthropomorphic organism, thrusting maddening, destructive, darkest energy of Orthodox Black Metal.

Traditional BM of Swedish School, with slight touches of early MAYHEM & DISSECTION, sounded like an insight, with all the sincerity of the beginning of 90-ties - totally unlike many nowadays "BM authorities". WATAIN were playing material from both longplays, as well as 2 exclusive tracks - "My Fists Are Him" (available in studio version only on 7" split with DIABOLICUM) and cover version on VON classical composition, which, in fact, has given WATAIN its name.

The only reason of frustration for enlightened part of the audience was a lack of magnificent track - "Casus Luciferi", though it was to sound live for much more involved audience.

The Event allowed making several far-reaching conclusions, concerning situation of Russian scene and audience. Fact, that there are worthy acts in Russia was recorded by two professional operators; speaking of national contingent characteristics, considerable ignorance on bright phenomena of foreign underground is to be mentioned. Overwhelming majority of visitors became acquainted with Swedes' work only at the concert. That bespeaks for passive position and inertia of Russian extreme metal production consumers. That's why only few could comprehend audio-visual message of WATAIN to the full. It can be constated that target audience and development level of Russian scene are in embryo state, but the precedent is created and complete evaluation of Event consequences can be carried out after certain period of time have passed.
Organizers' realization of indubitable commercial detrimentality of such events in Russia weren't considered when making decision on fest carrying out. FFFeast Crew is planning to conduct more local and international concerts, but do not have an intention to announce its plans.

As a conclusion, organizers would like to hail everyone, who made this extremely important Event possible.
